Breaking Tradition. . .How Karma Flowers designed a very hip(ster) wedding!

It was only eight weeks ago that we were called in to design Matt and Candice's October wedding in DUMBO, Brooklyn. Candice is a model, and is one in every sense of the word. . .tall and stunning, poised and beautiful. Oh- and busy. Matt is handsome and quirky. Dapper and funny. You know how it is, the guy with all of the laughs always snags the beautiful girl. But with her demanding travel schedule for shoots and his equally challenging work schedule, a lot needed to be done in very little time.

The first time we met them was at their reception venue, Rebar. This prohibition, hipster restaurant/bar/movie theatre fit this couple as well as they seem to fit each other. We dug the space. . .it was different and personal and unlike any others we have designed, and we couldn't wait to get started.

.
Ceremony venue. Powerhouse Arena. The aisle was created using pillar candles and you can see the paper crane  screen in the distance.

The Bride arrived in style.

There were a ton of additional elements to this wedding that made it so special. A New Orleans style jazz band escorted the bride and groom and their guests as they paraded from the ceremony to the reception. The bride and groom played a hysterical ten minute video on the wall of the bookstore before they both arrived at the ceremony. We made them a mustache and lip bouquet that were used later in the reception as photo props.  There was a signature drink and hot sauce and NYC tote bags as favors. They elected not to have a seating plan and we designed a very interesting way of letting their guests know they could sit where they would like. . .

Please excuse our iPhone pictures. As soon as professional pics become available we will be sure to share them, including pics of the bouquet and bout and the beautiful bride and groom -wait until you see her dress!

Fall in Love. . .Fall Wedding Floral and Event Design Inspiration

Friday, October 7, 2011

My favorite yoga instructor, Jillian Pransky, once described the fall season as the time where mother nature prepares herself for the long restful winter. "[Mother Nature] has offered so much of herself – support, beauty, food, and well being. Now the earth takes time to replenish and rejuvenate so she can rise up again and sustain us. And she does this over and over and over again. And so shall we."

Look familiar? Unexpected fall florals!

But before she rests for the winter, Mother Nature gives us such a wonderful palette of colors and textures and smells to play with. The fall is a very romantic season for all of these reasons and so we thought it appropriate, as the leaves begin to change, that we share with you some fall wedding/event design inspiration.

Love the variety of elements in each one

OK, so maybe not a crow for a wedding, but think of the possibilities. What about the couple's monogram? And the crow would work well for a more casual Fall affair. I just love the use of an actual pumpkin but in a sophisticated way.

That is a tomato! Fall is the perfect time to incorporate fruits and vegetables into your design because the colors work so well. And the barn . . .heaven!

How simple and elegant is this? Berries in vintage bottles.
* As for the first picture of the couples and balloons. . .Very, very rarely do we advocate the use of balloons in our event designs for personal aesthetic preferences, however I am all about this oversized, carnival balloon trend.
