A rustic baby shower with Lulu's Inspirations. . .by Karma Flowers

Monday, December 26, 2011

Back in early December, Karma Flowers had the pleasure of working with Lulu's Inspirations, a full service event design and planning boutique located in Northern New Jersey servicing the greater tri-state area. Our mission was to transform a very quaint, rustic, masculine room into the perfect baby shower setting. The room, below ground in NYC restaurant Southern Hospitality, boasts wood panelling (in the clique, modern way), plaid and leather wing back chairs and sofas, and wine barrel accents. It is the quintessential whiskey-tasting room, and the perfect challenge for two designers (Kim and myself) who LOVE to embrace the vintage touches. Who says a baby shower has to be dainty and pink and blue? Check out how we combined textures, colors, and an androgynous feel to this baby shower.

Kim had the great idea of covering glass vases with the pages from children's books and we filled them with mums, eucalyptus and berries.

We also used large silver and black lanterns and mason jars as the flower vessels. The lanterns were a perfect juxtaposition to the more feminine flowers that we filled them with in shades of white, blush and red.

Cabbage rosettes and white hydrangea stole the show in these pieces- not your typical baby shower flowers!

We love the way the flowers work together to form the perfect rustic-y centerpieces and the fluorescent lights in the background are perfection.

Kim also included some fun elements to the shower like a photo guest scrapbook and baby bottle favors. And the cake. . .whoa the cake. It was gorgeous! Check out Lulu's of Inspiration's Facebook page for more pics of the event.

Look for an upcoming guest blog post by our friend Kim from Lulu's Inspirations and enjoy!

Our DIY Winter Wedding...by Karma Flowers

Sunday, December 18, 2011

Being in the business and meeting with so many engaged couples, we often get the question, "What was your wedding like?" So, on the eve of our first anniversary Dave and I thought we would share our wedding. Looking back on these pictures is extra special for us because so much was going on in our lives at that very moment...we had purchased a home and moved just days before and as you can so obviously see, I was expecting our son who would be born less than six weeks later. Our wedding date was decided upon just a couple of weeks beforehand. We love that we have pictures that captured one of the most wonderfully crazy and joyous times of our lives.

Just because we were living out of boxes and I had limited mobility did not mean that we were going to be stopped from DIY-ing our own wedding. While we wanted to incorporate holiday decor, we weren't looking for traditional green and red and we did want to incorporate the vintage feel of the inn where we held the reception. (FYI- If you are in the NJ area, check out the Harvest Moon Inn in Ringoes. The food and vibe are amazing). I was able to get my hands on beautiful cream roses from South America and we constructed this unique take on a Christmas tree. You have seen them here before!

The rose trees were placed on chargers made from tree stumps. And they were accompanied by glass  ornaments we filled with white glitter and white feathers. We added some bling with the silver birds.

White poinsettias were an easy, festive choice and we also added tall luminaries that we made with durable paper and votive candles.

Each guest received the signature Karma Flowers holiday ornament in a raffia envelope.

One of our favorite touches were the wood napkin rings that we hand-stamped with our monogram the night before! We collected them afterward and use them when we have guests at our home for special occasions. They are a sweet reminder of wedding day.

Rather than have a traditional guestbook (since there was nothing traditional about the wedding), we opted for a puzzle in the shape of a tree. Each guest signed a piece and we have it hanging in our home. Notice the D+P carved out in the tree trunk- so perfect!

During the ceremony, our little boy decided he was going to begin kicking and the photographer was able to capture what would be our favorite image from that day...

Rev. Richard Cash was our officiant.

And some of our other favs...

It was apple cider! I promise! But another quirky thing we did was instead of having a signature drink, we rimmed the champagne glasses with green sugar and placed pomegranates in the glass for more of a holiday feel.

All in all it was the perfect day. And subsequently, the perfect year.

Laure de Sagazan dresses- Vintage Style Wedding Dresses

Wednesday, December 14, 2011

When we meet with a client, we often ask to see their save-the-dates and/or invitations and the wedding dress if already purchased. Why? Because both the stationary and dress design tell us a lot about the bride and groom's style and the feel of the day. Imagine how delighted we would be to be sent a picture of any of these breath-taking dresses by Laure de Sagazan. Effortless, timeless, and perfect....

How to Make Those Festive Mason Jar Snow Globes...by Karma Flowers

Saturday, December 10, 2011

I have to give credit where credit is due...
I first saw the mason jar snow globes in Anthropologie and fell in love. Since then they have been popping up here and there, but with hefty price tags! So Karma Flowers set out to make our own...

First things first, the perfect jar. We chose two different size wide-mouth mason jars that are always available in grocery and craft stores and are totally affordable (typically less than a dollar each).

We purchased synthetic snow from Lowes, for $1.97 a bag.  You can also use confetti made from scraps of paper, glitter (Anthropologie's are made with glitter), or even sugar. We made six globes total and still had most of the bag of snow, so you can share a bag with other projects.

We also chose to use the evergreen trees to decorate our snow globes and we purchased them at Lowes as well (about $12 for 21 pieces which is a great deal - and we have seen them at Michaels and Home Depot too). However, this is where you can get really creative! You can include any non-perishable item -think ornaments, deer, branches...the possibilities are endless. All you need to be mindful of when selecting your decorations is the size. The flat part of the mason jar lid is your total surface area, so be sure all of your treasures fit on it with enough room for the jar to slide over.

Once you have your elements, the construction is easy. Simply take a glob of glue or glue dot (we used our trusty glue dots for this project) and secure your trees to the inside of the mason jar lid.

Fill the glass jar with your snow concoction (a little bit really goes a long way!). Fasten on the lid and flip the mason jar over. Shake it up so the snow falls where you would like it and wal-la...you have a mason jar snow globe. Wasn't that simple and fun?

Here are our final globes....

HAPPY HOLIDAYS!!!
